Saturday night’s all right for SL

April 29, 2007

**Warning: Very long post ahead**

I still have a bit of RL work to do before the degree, and as I’ve done frequently this semester, I’m procrastinating. It was hard to do yesterday, until I received a notice that Annie’s group Toe’d Up was going to be playing. That’s all the justification I needed ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, they were great. Annie’s voice really is outstanding, and it seems like she has some really cool and fun bandmates. They did a mix of covers and original songs. They played “Heart Shaped Box” again (which made me happy) along with an acoustical version of “Freak on a Leash” (and coincidentally, I heard the original later while shopping). I’m starting to learn some of the words to their original songs now as well, since I’ve heard them a few times ๐Ÿ™‚ One of my favorites is called, I think, “What Have I Done?” Annie sounds really fantastic singing it.

Unfortunately, Annie couldn’t get her avie on stage for the gig. The kids are getting too popular, it seems, and are lagging sims where they play. It’s too bad, as this would have been a chance to get a pic of all their avies on stage. I did take some pics of the other band members, though ๐Ÿ™‚

After watching them play, I went shopping. The idea was to get new ears, since I didn’t think the ones I had looked good with the new hair. Yes, sometimes shopping begets shopping (hmm . . . sounding biblical here). Of course, it was another reason to procrastinate as well.

I actually got a little down while shopping. Too much stuff on my mind it seems ๐Ÿ™‚ Plus, I went to the Clothing Fair, and I couldn’t find myself getting interested in anything. Definitely was not like the Hair Fair, even though they put some effort into the design of it, separating the fair into heaven and hell, including dropping some cool sculpts into the sim.

While at the fair, I got an IM from Tobie, who had apparently been into the catnip ๐Ÿ˜ฎ We talked a little bit, and then I logged off, thinking I would go to sleep and maybe be in a better mood when I woke up. But I didn’t. Instead, I logged back into SL, and I’m glad that I did.

I searched a little bit more for neko ears, but after messing with the ears I had a bit, I became satisfied. While out, I was approached by a newbie asking for money. Well, maybe “approached” isn’t the right word. It seems that I was somewhat stalked by this newbie ๐Ÿ™‚ I saw her in Gritty Kitty, looking like she was straight from Orientation Island, though a glance at her profile told me she had been in game for almost two months. I went next door to Refuge (I think that’s the name of the store), and it seems that she followed me there.

I generally do not like it when people ask me for money in SL. For one, an avie can be pretty well equipped for less than US $5 with a little effort, and are there really so many people that can’t afford that? Second, I never approached a stranger asking for anything as a newbie. I asked questions on occasion, but I think I was always already engaged in a conversation with someone before I did that (and now I’m sure I bother my friends with questions way too much). Most of what I learned early on I learned by trying things out and doing research on my own. And all the money I spent was money that I put into the game.

But when this newbie (who actually came into the game less than a month after I did, though I’m sure hasn’t spent nearly the same amount of time in SL) asked me for money, a few things struck me. First, items in SL are relatively cheap, so I really was not giving away much. Also, her asking me for money obviously meant that I didn’t look like a newbie anymore. Our start dates were less than a month apart, yet it seems that I had managed to at least look like I know what I’m doing, so much so that she didn’t bother asking the other people in Gritty Kitty for money, but followed me to the next store. Of course, for all I know, she had already asked everyone in there, or maybe I’m an obvious mark, but I like my explanation better ๐Ÿ™‚ Finally, I like to help people in world. Just earlier that day, I had a guy approach me at Curious Kitties. While I cringed, thinking it would lead to another “sex wiht me” solicitation, he was curious as to where he could find a good neko skin. I suggested he check out Temenos and Hybrid. I was pleased when I saw him later at Ari’s with his new neko skin (coincidentally enough, the male version of the ivory leopard skin I have). His look still needed work, but he managed to win ears and a tail from a lucky chair outside Ari’s. He’ll get there ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow, this is getting long, isn’t it? Anyway, I didn’t want to just drop a bunch of money on the newbie, because there’s still a part of me that is afraid someone may be trying to scam me (damn paranoia). Since she was still (barely) under 60 days old, I offered her the money to buy all of the newbie hair that ETD has. I also suggested she check out places like Free Dove to pick up prim shoes/clothing. In the past, I’ve taken people to these places personally, but I was still a little down, so I just gave her a landmark to ETD, and she was on her way ๐Ÿ™‚

I was still somewhat interested in looking at new ears, so I went to OTCR. After I teleported in, I noticed Briony McArdle, who I recognized from this pic that Faye Gelfand has posted on Flickr. I think she was surprised when I stated that I recognized her from Flickr, and we talked a bit after a friend she roleplays with left. I talked to her a little bit about roleplaying, owing all I know of it to my discussions with Tobie. Before she logged off, she asked if she could add me as a friend, which I happily agreed to ๐Ÿ™‚ I think she was taken in by Victor. Everyone seems to like his cranky ass ๐Ÿ™‚

I did just a little bit more looking around that night and wandered into the House of Paisley. I noticed that they were selling t-shirts from which all proceeds were going to Virginia Tech.

If you’re interested, shirts are bought with a donation of L$100, L$500, or L$1000. You receive both a men’s and women’s shirt, and the shirts do not change based on the amount donated (which I think is a good thing).

I logged off not long after getting my shirt, in a better mood than I had been in previously. I need to quit letting myself get down. There are plenty of reasons not to be ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, if you made your way through this leviathan of a post, congratulations on the feat ๐Ÿ˜‰ And thank you for reading ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. So did you or didn’t you give the newbie money? I’ve been known to ask a newbie if they have money (after talking to them to a bit to see if they’re nice) and drop some L on them if they didn’t have any. But, I would NEVER give money to someone that was asking me for it! If they don’t want to spend money they they have to either earn it or get some freebies like the rest of us did. In which case, I would give them the landmark to freebie places and probably tp out to escape from them =P

So I take it you didn’t get ears from Curious Kitties?

  2. Congratulations for getting through that monstrous post ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, I did give her money, but it was only L$80, which should have been enough for ETD (I believe they have 8 newbie women’s hairstyles for L$10 each). I also mentioned Free Dove to her, but I didn’t give her a landmark (don’t have one).

And, no, I didn’t get the ears from Curious Kitties. What do you think of the black ears with this hair (check out the Virginia Tech pic)? Do they work?

  3. You have difficulty saying “no”, don’t you?

/me pats you on the head and says “there there”

I think the ears work, btw.

I’m surprised you didn’t get the ones from Curious Kitties. Do you already have the ones from Anisa? Those are nice because there’s lots of accessories you can get for them too.

  4. I can say “no” . . . whenever I choose to ๐Ÿ™‚

The only ears I have are the Jungle Voodoo ears I bought with my skin. I would like at least another set for variety, but there are *so* many shops selling ears now that I’m unsure which ones to buy :/

  5. Anisa’s ears look very similar to the Voodoo ones. They’re cute, and scripted.
